Michael is an Irish electronic engineer that has worked in the field of Assistive Technology for the last 8 years.

“Before I embarked down this path I was a controls engineer where I was involved in building a hydroelectric power plant in Guatemala. Working there changed my outlook about how engineering can have such a positive effect on people’s lives. One day when I was having a coffee here in Toronto I saw a gentleman with drop foot - It's a condition that evolves in individuals who’ve had a stroke where they can't lift their foot when they walk - I knew that there was enough technology in my cell phone to help people like this and couldn't believe that it wasn't being applied. Further research led me to Holland Bloorview Children’s Rehabilitation Hospital. When I realised the outstanding effort they do in the development of independent living in children with physical disabilities I called up to see if I could apply my skills. Luckily they were looking for a person with these skill sets and I got a job working in their EADL (Electronic Aids to Daily Living) department. Over the years my job evolved and I started to work in the AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) department; assisting kids with physical disabilities to communicate and thus gain more independence within their lives. One big problem was the Assistive Technology equipment like the commercially available TV controls which were outdated or not innovative enough. I felt there needed to be a revolution or evolution in this field and a couple of years later I began to offer Assistive Technology solutions to people, and started my own company, with a goal of releasing technology which uses modern tech and solutions.”
